Do you know that in the second decade of the year 2000, Facebook was the most downloaded mobile app? Facebook is the largest social network worldwide with approximately 2.8 billion users as of December 2020. The headquarters are in Menlo Park, California. The social media platform can be accessed from devices with internet connectivity, for instance, smartphones, tablets as well as personal computers. The registered users for this service can post text, multimedia along with photos which other users who have agreed to be their “friends” can view.

Facebook Founders

Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz as well as Chris Hughes are the Facebook founders who at the inception of this company were students at Harvard University. Initially the creators limited the membership to Harvard students and later expanded to Yale, Stanford, and Columbia universities.

Initially, the platform was called FaceMash, which was opened in 2003 by Zuckerberg during his second year in college. The software application allowed visitors to make a comparison of two female students pictures on parallel and the decide the more attractive one. Gradually, the site was forwarded to several campus group list-servers, however, it was shut down days later when the Harvard administration expelled Mark. Renown entrepreneur and banker Rahul Jain auctioned FaceMash for $30,201 on 25th October 2010.


A brief description into Facebook history. The name “face book” inspired the founders because it meant a student directory featuring photos as well as basic information. Facebook was then given access to other universities in United States of America and Canada. In 2004, Sean Parker became the president of the new Facebook company although initially, he acted as Mark’s informal advisor. Also, in that year, the institution moved its base operations to Palo Alto, California.

A milestone was reached in December 2005 as they had 6 million users and expanded to twenty-one universities in the United Kingdom and others globally.  In 2007, the giant platform had 100,000 business pages, which started first as group pages then evolved to company pages. In 2014, Facebook in collaboration with Storyful announced a new feature named as FB Newswire. Till today, the social platform has been growing tremendously through introducing features that assist the users improve their lives and networks through sharing items, facilitating business online among others.

The giant social media and networking provider, has some of these key elements that allows users to effortlessly interact with the site. To begin with, the news feed, this is the main system that allow the registered users to see content posted on the platform. Initially, the secret method in the algorithm to determine the content to show was called EdgeRank. The introduction of the news feed did not receive a positive reception, as the visitors complained that it was too cluttered and with excess information. Consequently, Facebook announced a new redesigned news feed on 27th March 2013.

The second feature is the “friends”. Friends on this platform are two people who the first one sends a “friend request” while the second party accepts. The two parties can now view each other’s posts on the news feed. These features allow for some privacy in case one person does not want to accept the “friend request”. The options are declining the friend request or deleting a friend request.

The third element is the “likes” and “reactions”. In 2009, the like button was enabled to help users to conveniently interact with photos, comments, links as well as updates shared by friends or advertisements. Also, Facebook after extensive testing and engaging the public on the incorporation of the “dislike” button. This resulted in the introduction of the “reaction” which have these five pre-defined emotions “angry”, “sad”, “wow”, “haha” and “love.”

In conclusion, Facebook is the largest social media as well as social networking provider worldwide with an estimate of 2.8 billion users as of December 2020. Mark Zuckerberg and other university students founded it while studying in Harvard. Not to mention, throughout the years, Facebook, Inc. has been making major improvements on the features of this networking service to boost user experience.
